The Canadian Under 19s put on a disastrous batting performance against tournament hosts Ireland today. They had no answer to some fine seam and swing bowling from the Irish and were all out for 37 in 25 overs. The Irish also struggled in difficult conditions and at one point were 22/5 but reached the target in 13 overs.
Canada’s decision to bat after winning the toss was ill-advised as the Irish opening bowlers found swing and seam movement, and rapidly ran through the Canadian batting. Canada got off to a poor start, losing both openers with only 2 runs on the board and then things got worse as Dutta, Ramsammy and Ali were the victims of a hat-trick by McCarter, leaving Canada at a dismal 10 for 5. Edghill, after being dropped but at least reaching double figures, also fell to McCarter, and then Pathan was bowled by Getkate. Getkate took his fourth wicket when Juvarajan was leg-before and Canada were 26/8. Getkate’s final figures were 10-2-21-4. McCarter took his 5th wicket in his final over when Manoosingh was caught at cover, finishing with the highly impressive figures of 10-5-8-5. The last wicket pairing survived five more overs, but Canada totaled a meagre 37 all out. It could in fact have been worse, as the Irish dropped three catches and bowled 8 wides.
Sidhu and Aulakh bowled well, also taking advantage of the conditions, and at one point Ireland were 22/5. If Canada had managed another 30 or 40 runs, Ireland might have struggled attaining the target but as it was they passed it with 37 overs to spare.
The highest score on either side was 10, and 15 wickets had fallen for 59 runs when the last Irish wicket fell.
