On a field in King City, amateur cricket players are dreaming of the big leagues

It may be a sunny Saturday afternoon in June, but the mood of the crowd at Maple Leaf Cricket Club’s field 1B in King City is starting to get a little dark. The fan-favourite Caribbean Limers are falling behind to the undefeated Brampton Masters, thanks to some impressive hitting by the Brampton side.
The “crowd” in question consists of roughly a dozen very vocal middle-aged men sitting in lawn chairs and on weathered wooden bleachers, and the majority of the players they are watching aren’t professionals, but amateurs with day jobs who dedicate several hours every week to playing in the Elite Division of the Toronto and District Cricket Association (TDCA). A sprawling, multi-level 150-plus team league that plays its schedule on field locations that span the width and length of the Greater Toronto Area, the TDCA is the largest and highest-profile league in one of Canada’s fastest growing sports.
