Peel Schools Indoor Cricket buzzing along

The Region of Peel Senior Schools Athletic Association’s (ROPSSAA) indoor cricket competition for 2013-2014 began after the March Break and scores have been rolling in to the scoring database.

The Senior Boys competition has 31 teams competing in four divisions with the playoff Final scheduled for May 14, 2014. David Suzuki currently leads the NorthWest Division, Sandalwood leads in the NorthEast, Stephen Lewis tops the standings in the SouthWest, while three teams in the SouthEast Division each have six points from three wins. Rick Hansen has 3 wins from 3 games in this SouthEast Division, Woodlands has 3 wins from 4 games, and Glenforest has 3 wins from 5 games.

The Junior Boys competition has ten competing teams, split into North and South divisions, each with five teams. Sandalwood (3 wins from 3 games) and North Park (3 wins from 4 games) head the North Division standings, while unbeaten Glenforest (4 wins from 4 games) are leading the way in the South. The junior boys competition final is scheduled for May 7, 2014.

There is also provision for a Girls cricket final on May 8, 2014 in the ROPSSAA Athletic Calendar.

Ideally someone might have heralded the opening of this competition a few weeks ago, but hopefully this brief outlined might broaden awareness that this school calendar year’s event is underway. One of yesterday’s scores had not been filed, but scores are in place from all the other scheduled games for this current campaign.

Rome was not built in a day, as former Cricket Canada President Mr. Ranjit Saini once told me. He may have said it during his days as President of Maple Leaf Cricket Club rather than when he was Canadian cricket’s el supremo, but I can’t remember at this particular moment. The discipline of pushing the scores out to a central source in a timely manner allows someone at the ROPSSAA to bounce news from the various school sports events to daily newspapers and other media outlets for potentially broader publication.

In the course of sorting out some stored items this week I found a 1969 Canadian Cricket Association Annual that included two scorecards for the 1968-1969 Canadian Shield Competition. So sometime soon the 1968 scorecards from Quebec’s Eastern Division win against Ontario and the tied Western Division game between Saskatchewan and Manitoba should appear on the Cricket Archive database of Canadian cricket’s history. A report about the tied game means several first names of players may emerge from the shadows onto that database.

The result of the 1968 Alberta v British Columbia game in that competition will also join the archives, with significantly less detail. But still a step forward in ensuring future generations may know more about Canadian cricket’s history from days before I first visited Canada. (EN)
