Twitter response to stadium announcement

The recent media release relating to the construction of a $700 million cricket stadium in the GTA has prompted a cynical response on Twitter, led by US based journalist Peter Della Penna.

An article was published online today about a $700m cricket stadium approved to be built in Canada. If it sounds absurd, it’s because it is.

Peter Della Penna ‏@PeterDellaPenna
In fact, for a brief moment, I had to check to make sure I was not reading The Onion instead of the cricket site where it actually appeared.

Jamie Harrison ‏@JamieCricketUSA
@PeterDellaPenna Feasibility aside, I’d rather have a dozen University Ovals in Dunedin than one mega-stadium. We need grounds, not stadia.

@JamieCricketUSA @PeterDellaPenna 700 million dollars? Are they bidding to host the wc? Absurd.

Jamie Harrison ‏@JamieCricketUSA
@youhavethewrite @PeterDellaPenna It’s all predicated on the existence of (yet another) super-mega-hyper Cricket Premier League. [yawn]

You Have The Write ‏@youhavethewrite
@JamieCricketUSA @PeterDellaPenna its the bs of people that think grassroots level cricket is some sort of cricket-mole hybrid animal.

My favorite quote from fantasy filled Canada stadium piece: “There isn’t a stadium anywhere in the world like the one we intend to build.”

Peter Della Penna ‏@PeterDellaPenna 24m
Very true. There isn’t a stadium anywhere in the world like it…. nor will there ever be because it will never ever be built in Canada.

.@PeterDellaPenna exactly; as I said to a friend the other day, it is someone’s pipedream in press release format.

RT @sdayanand We are struggling to build a new baseball stadium for the Blue Jays and yeah, we’ll get a cricket stadium. Bollocks.

Peter Della Penna ‏@PeterDellaPenna
“You know how the $6m Indianapolis and $70m Florida cricket stadiums failed. Let’s do a $700m one in Canada! I swear it’ll work this time!”

Jarrod Kimber ‏@ajarrodkimber
I’m planning on building a $17,000,000,0000,000 cricket stadium. I don’t have any money or land. But I’m planning it.

Peter Della Penna ‏@PeterDellaPenna
“The proposed stadium, which does not yet have a confirmed location nor publicly revealed backers.” Did I mention I’m also selling bridges?

Andrew Nixon ‏@andrewnixon79
The odds of this $700 million cricket stadium in Toronto happening are roughly the same as the odds of ICC letting an associate play Tests.
