On trial - player profiles (Jon Harris)

We are pleased to present a series of profiles of players selected to participate in the Victoria day weekend trials.

Suresh Jayaraman - Manitoba

Suresh Jayaraman is a 27 year old all rounder who bats number 4 and bowls right arm slow medium with the All India Cricket Club in Winnipeg. He has played representative cricket for Manitoba in the U-25 side, and the senior Manitoba team. Fielding mostly in the slips, Suresh is comfortable fielding anywhere. Learning his cricket in Chennai, India, he came to Canada in September 1999 and has focused his cricket development under the coaching of Sports Manitoba's Ron Dipchand. In his non-cricket life Suresh is a Business Systems Analyst, and is enrolled in a Ph.D. Computer Science program at the University of Manitoba. He rates his century against Calgary in his first U-25 tour "as the most memorable one because I went on to get the Best Batsman Award for Manitoba".

Gayan Fernando - BC

Gayan Sajiv Fernando is a left handed upper order batsman. Born 1981 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, he emigrated to Canada in 2000. Since his arrival in Canada he has become a mainstay of the Richmond C.C. batting line up, usually as an opening batsman. Blessed with a good eye, and a powerful physique, Sajiv is a forceful strokeplayer who seeks to dominate the bowling. Recently, his bustling right arm inswingers have become more effective as he makes strides towards being a genuine all rounder.

Kevin Sandher - BC

Kevin Talvinder Sandher was born in Vancouver in 1980. He is a left arm spinner and useful right handed lower order batsman. Kevin is a product of the Vancouver youth cricket system having learned his trade in the British Columbia Mainland Cricket League. Having played for the Canadian Under-Under-19 team from July 1998 - January 2000, he made his debut for the B.C. Provincial side in 1999. In October 2000 Kevin made his Canadian debut against Barbados. In addition to his Canadian experience Kevin has also spent time on the Lords groundstaff and with the Sunshine Coast Scorchers of the Brisbane Grade cricket competition. Kevin currently plays for Meraloma C.C. in Vancouver. Currently he is a student at the University of British Columbia pursuing a degree in kinesiology.

Iain Dixon - BC

Iain Keith Dixon was born in Victoria, B.C in 1971, where he was raised. He is a right handed opening batsman. Iain played his early cricket with Albion C.C. in the VDCA before moving on to play in the BCMCL in the early 1990s. A member of the Canadian Under 19 team which toured England in 1989, Iain debuted for British Columbia in 1990 and has been a provincial representative since then. Iain has also played in the Kent League with Tunbridge Wells, the Scottish National League with Uddingston C.C. and with Petersham-Marrickville D.C.C. in the Sydney Grade competition. In 1998 he was selected for Scottish Universities while on exchange. Iain currently plays with Meraloma C.C. in the BCMCL where he opens the batting and bowls right arm medium pace. Iain is a lawyer with the City of Vancouver law department.

Channa Karunaratne - BC

Channa Karunaratne is a right handed middle order batsman,occasional right arm seam bowler and wicket keeper. Channa was born in 1974 and educated in Sri Lanka before emigrating to Canada in 1989. Since arriving in Vancouver he has been a consistent performer for, and captain of, Richmond C.C. in the BCMCL and a member of the B.C. Provincial side. He made his debut, and only appearance, for Canada against Bermuda in 1999.


Suresh Jayaraman
