Update on ROPSSAA Standings

(May 7, 2018)
The playoff schedules had not been posted when May 7 drew to a close, but on checking the playing regulations the results of head-to-head games of teams level on points is the potential tie-breaker when teams have the same number of points. One result is not yet recorded in the Junior Boys South Division.

Girls Varsity – South Division

The last game of the regular season was defaulted by Mentor College to Heart Lake SS. This leaves two teams tied on points at the top of the South Division, namely Heart Lake SS (W 5, L 1) and North Park SS (W 5, L 1). In this case the playing regulations indicate the results of head to head game or games (each won once and lost once) and then net run rates of the head to head games between Heart Lake and North Park decide the placings.

Heart Lake [44 for 5 from 6 overs] beat North Park [24 for 6, i.e. all out, 5.2 overs] by 30 runs and bowled out North Park after 5.2 overs in the game on April 11. North Park then won a close game on April 25 by either 2 runs or 2 wickets; a result you cannot tell from the basic scores as both teams batted the full 6 overs. Heart Lake 38/6 (all out, 6 overs), North Park 40/4 (6 overs). No need to get out calculators or update spreadsheets for the analysis, except in interests of precision, in this situation as Heart Lake’s win by a big margin places them at the top of the table with North Park in second place.

Boys Junior – South Division

One result still missing for the South Division but Turner Fenton and Stephen Lewis are level on points at the top of the standings with the result of Turner Fenton v Glenforest not yet disclosed. There was only one head-to-head game between Turner Fenton and Stephen Lewis in the regular season which was a big win for Turner Fenton. So Turner Fenton will end in first place with or without a win in the missing result game, other things being equal as an economist might say. Turner Fenton 48 for 5 from 6 overs then bowling out Stephen Lewis (so 6 wickets lost) for 12 runs from 3 overs would seem to decide Turner Fenton place top in Junior Boys South Division.

There were five schools in the South division so some played twice against each other but played one school only once in the regular season. The North division had four schools and was contested as on a double round robin basis.
