Peel Region Indoor Regular Season Concludes

The Peel Region High Schools indoor cricket regular season wrapped up this week, although two results remain to be published which could make a difference to the final standings in the Varsity Girls and Junior Boys competitions. But the reporting structure for results and basic game scores follows a results reporting standard that is higher than in various mainstream cricket leagues in Ontario.
The regular season schedules for the three Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) indoor cricket competitions have been updated on a timely basis and include runs scored, wickets lost and overs bowled. This provides a base for being able to report on the existence and progress of the Varsity Girls, Senior Boys and Junior Boys competitions.

One of the requirements is that the home team provide someone to update the visual scoreboard, which would certainly be a useful standard for outdoor cricket competitions played in the Greater Toronto Area, some of which are national, regional and provincial competitions that are sometimes played on grounds with no visual scoreboard facility. The failure to post any numbers on a visual scoreboard where one exists is, in my opinion, a less than inspiring aspect in some outdoor cricket “events”.
Schedules for the playoffs have not yet been posted on the official ROPSSAA website, but will surely appear within the next few days.
Varsity Girls Cricket
The Varsity Girls cricket regular season comprised double-round robin play in two groups of four schools. Sandalwood Heights S.S. won all six regular season games to top the North standings followed by Humberview SS (won 3, lost 3), Louise Arbour SS (W 2, L 4) and Castlebrook SS (W 1, L5). Sandalwood Heights chalked up a useful 72/5 from 6 overs on May 1 then restricted Louise Arbour to 38/3. It was the joint highest score of the season in Varsity Girls cricket. Heart Lake struck 72/6 from 6 overs against Father Michael Goetz CSS on April 12.
One result remains to be published for the South group and it could make a difference as Heart Lake S.S. with 4 wins and 1 loss had the potential to overtake North Park SS (W 5, L 1) at the top of the table. Heart Lake SS was due to visit Mentor College (W 2, L3) on Friday May 4, the last day of the regular season. Earlier in the week Heart Lake struck 60/4 from 6 overs when hosting and beating Mentor College by 21 runs. Mentor College scored 39/1 from 6 overs. Father Michael Goetz CSS ended the season with 6 losses from 6 games, conceding the game against Heart Lake on May 3.
Senior Boys Cricket
T.L. Kennedy SS beat league leading Port Credit SS by 34 runs to end the regular season in the

South East division. It was TL Kennedy’s third win of the season and took them level on points with Glenforest SS but behind Port Credit in the standings. Glenforest had been bowled out for 57 (6 wickets lost from 7.2 overs) in a loss to Gordon Graydon on April 30. Gordon Graydon won with 58/2 from 7.3 overs, winning with 3 balls to spare. Port Credit end the season at the top of the South East division with 3 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss. TL Kennedy, Glenforest and Father Michael Goetz each end the season with 3 wins and 2 defeats. Gordon Graydon won 2 and lost 3 while Mentor College are at the foot of the South East standings with 4 losses but picked up a tie against table-topping Port Credit.
Rick Hansen SS hit 60/1 from 8 overs then bowled out Erindale for 36 after 7 overs to win the last game of the regular season in the South West division. John Fraser ended in first place with 5 wins from 5 matches, Stephen Lewis SS had 4 wins and a loss for second place and Rick Hansen’s win against Erindale took them into third place with 3 wins and 2 losses. Meadowvale SS, Clarkson SS and Erindale each ended with 1 win and 4 defeats.
In the North division Sandalwood Heights conceded a game to Louise Arbour. This gave Louise Arbour a record of 2 wins and 2 losses for the season and left Sandalwood Heights on 4 losses. Heart Lake ended with 1 win and 3 losses, the win coming in the penultimate week against Louise Arbour. Castlebrooke SS won the North division with an unbeaten record of 4 wins from 4 games with North Park SS in second place thanks to 3 wins and 1 loss. The loss was against Castlebrooke on April 23 when North Park’s 48/4 from 8 overs proved insufficient. Castlebrooke struck 49/1 (7.1 overs) to win with 5 balls to spare.
St Joseph CSS struck 94/2 from 8 overs, the highest total of the Senior Boys regular season, in the North Central division against St Francis Xavier CSS on April 30. St Francis Xavier replied with 39/4 from 8 overs, giving St Joseph the win by 55 runs.
Junior Boys Cricket
Central Peel SS won the North division with 6 regular season wins from 6 games. North Park SS placed second in the North thanks to 4 wins and 2 defeats, both against Central Peel. Castlebooke SS picked up two wins against Sandalwood Heights SS so Castlebrooke (W 2, L 4) came third in the North division ahead of Sandalwood Heights (W 0, L 6).
One South division result is missing from the closing week of the regular season. So we wait to learn if Turner Fenton SS managed a win against Glenforest SS that would give Turner Fenton a 6th win of the season from 6 games. So Turner Fenton currently heads the standings with 5 wins from 5 games, level on points with Stephen Lewis SS who won 5 games but previously lost to Turner Fenton. Glenforest, after 5 games, had won 2 and lost 3. T.L. Kennedy won 2 and lost 4 while Applewood Heights ended the season with 6 defeats.
