Cricket Ontario is inviting registrations and holding open trials next week for those interesting in playing in the Ontario team at the 2018 Under-17 Canada Cup. This year’s Canada Cup is due to be hosted by Cricket BC in Vancouver from July 3 through July 6. The trials are to take place on May 23 (Wednesday) and May 24 (Thursday) on Ground A at Centennial Park, Etobicoke.
Canadian national team players are exempted from having to play in the trials but are requested to register via the Cricket Ontario website. “There will be a $10 registration fee to raise funds for the Ontario team.” Players taking part in the trials are required to arrive in time for registration verification which will start at 5.30pm.
Eligibility criteria in terms of age (born on or after 1 September 2000), Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, and eligibility to play for Canada in 2020 are outlined on the Cricket Ontario website. Those participating in the trials on Wednesday and Thursday are provided some basic guidelines regarding the playing equipment each should bring to the ground.
The registration form seeks some basic playing information about each player in terms of batting and bowling styles as well as the 2017 club or academy and playing level (junior or senior).
My understanding is that some potential participants may be involved in CIMA Mayor’s outdoor cricket competitions, where Canadian Tire is the lead sponsor, during the day on Wednesday (May 23) that may limit the ability of some players to turn up on time at Centennial Park. The Mississauga High School Boys High School City Championship event is being played in Brampton on Wednesday. Also being played on Wednesday is the York Region Boys High School Championship is taking place at McCowan Reservoir, Markham.
The scheduled dates for the CIMA Mayor’s Brampton Boys High School (Tuesday May 22) and CIMA Mayor’s Toronto Boys High School (Tuesday May 29) events do not clash with the Ontario Under-17 trials.

Perhaps some day relatively soon there will be a junior Canada Cup for female players. CIMA Mayor’s Girls High School qualifying competitions are taking place for Toronto Girls High Schools on Thursday May 24 at Sunnybrook Park, Toronto. The Peel Region Girls High School outdoor cricket championship is being played at Batsman Park, Brampton on Thursday May 24.
