CricInfo writer Peter Della Penna tweets:_
“Good luck to everyone trying to find info about today’s Global T20 Canada franchise league draft. Emailing the league’s designated media liaison gets you a bounce back with “GT20Canada.ca domain could not be found” message.”
Discussion on twitter suggests the draft is in fact on Friday- which resulted in Della Penna’s response “That’s the fourth different date they’ve communicated. The others were May 26, 30 and 31.”
Update– the GT20 facebook account now states the draft is on Sunday….
The always entertaining Iceland cricket twitter account also had commentary:-
“From the @canadiancricket website: claims that the first international match was played in Canada (it wasn’t), that Canada won the Auty Cup in 2017 (it didn’t), that the first world cup was in 1879 (it wasn’t) and that Canada played in it (it didn’t). At least our lies are true.”
As a correction the graphic they were commenting on is on the Global T20 web site, and not the Cricket Canada web site.
Bertus de Jong, follower and writer on Associate cricket comments on Steve Smith’s inclusion as a marquee player
“.com.au reported that he’d got an ok from CA last week, but then the president of Cricket Canada denied he’d even been approached. Suddenly CA are announcing him as a Marquee player. Also odd that not one of those supposedly signed on has said anything about the league.”
In the meantime the launch of the new league has been generally greeted very positively on Facebook, although the logo has attracted some comment. A Facebook user wrote:-
“thought it was the GT20, not the GiT20. Probably not good to use the word “git”. Also … really … use a font that’s been out of favour for years, and italicize it just for fun?”
The main point perhaps is that Canadian cricket is getting noticed – and that hasn’t happened for a while.
