“Smith didn’t want to simply leave a lump sum with the Canadian board, and met with local coaches and officials to determine how his money could best meet a direct need.
He was told Canadian cricket has suffered greatly from kids pulling out, because their parents — mostly immigrants from Indian and Pakistani backgrounds — can’t afford steep registration and uniform fees that start at about $350 a year.
Smith’s plan is to provide direct assistance to families in Toronto — through the Toronto Cricket Club — by setting up a fund that will effectively cover all cricket costs for struggling parents.
The idea isn’t to pay for just one year’s costs, but to provide assistance to the same families for several seasons to try and keep young kids playing and the game growing as a result.
