Canada got a taste of what might face them in the World Cup as they took on their first serious opposition in warm-up matches. That taste was a bitter one, as they were comprehensively beaten by Bangladesh, a side they defeated in the World Cup eight years ago. After a poor start, a partial middle order recovery was followed by a spectacular collapse, and Canada failed to bat out their overs, mustering just 112. In reply Bangladesh had little trouble, rapidly completing a 9-wicket win, thanks to a rapid 69 from Tamim Iqbal.
Bangladesh won the toss and asked Canada to bat – the game is 15/ side allowing a choice of eleven to bat, and eleven to field. Canada’s fragile batting line up was exposed badly by the Bangladesh bowling attack taking full advantage of knowledge of local conditions. Canada has had difficulty finding an opening partnership and these continued as Patel went for a duck, and Davison, kept away from the strike, managed 2 from 10 balls in 6.2 overs. Gunasekera also failed, and Canada were in early trouble at 22/3. Bagai (30) and Hansra (22) mounted something of a recovery, but then four wickets fell with the score on 81, with ducks for Cheema (a golden) and Whatham. Kumar and Baidwan put up the hundred in the 31st over but the final total of 112 in 37.3 overs does not augur well for Canada’s performance in the World Cup.
The Bangladesh openers treated the Canadian bowlers with scant respect, and the fifty went up in just 7 overs. Tamim Iqbal reached a 36 ball half century with three sixes and five fours. He was bowled by Cheema for 69 from 50 balls, but that was Canada’s only success as Bangladesh won by 9 wickets with over 30 overs to spare.
