Second annual cricket match – British Consul General’s XI Vs. CIMA Toronto Mayor’s XI

TORONTO, July 20, 2011 /CNW/ – The British Consul General in Toronto will be leading a cricket team to play against the CIMA Toronto Mayor’s youth team – recently announced by the City to represent Toronto in London, England. The young Toronto cricketers were selected through the Cricket Across The Pond (CAP) program that uses cricket as a vehicle to reach out to youth from Toronto’s diverse neighborhoods.
The second annual British Consul General’s XI Vs. CIMA Toronto Mayor’s XI will be held at the Toronto Cricket Skating & Curling Club (TCSCC) on July 26th, 2011. British Consul General Jonathan Dart will lead the Consul General’s team in a friendly cricket encounter as the young cricketers prepare to take on their British counterparts during the fourth annual UK cricket tour. The July 26th match will also give the young Toronto cricketers an opportunity to play at the TCSCC cricket pitch with conditions similar to the cricket grounds in London, England and meets International cricket standards. The CIMA Toronto Mayor’s youth team will be leaving Toronto on July 29th and returning on August 6th.
The Access & Diversity Unit of the Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation is CIMA’s partner in launching the CAP scholarship program. CAP uses cricket as a vehicle to reach out to youth from Toronto’s diverse neighborhoods, by giving them a sense of hope, increased self-esteem and opportunities to become positive role models in our communities. The 2011 CIMA Toronto Mayor’s team consists of players aged 16 to 21 yrs, born in 6 different countries including South Korea, Jamaica, Guyana and Canada. Together they speak seven different languages. Working in partnership of with the British Consulate General in Toronto and the Borough of Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom, CAP provides young Toronto cricketers with the opportunity to travel to UK, represent our City and learn life skills as ambassadors. The annual UK tour of the CIMA Mayor’s Team, aims to develop these young Toronto ambassadors into role models in our communities.
