Schools Cricket in Ontario’s York Region (Eddie Norfolk)

Canadian cricket throws up some interesting situations. Those who think that snow covers the Great White North for most of the year might be surprised to read the York Region of Ontario had an outdoor cricket season in September and October, 2011.

The Fall 2011 Varsity Boys Tier 1 cricket competition began on September 26th when Bur Oak SS (Markham) beat Middlefield (Markham) by 21 runs at Fairtree Community Park. Two days later Richmond Hill HS beat Jean Vanier CHS (Richmond Hill), probably by a certain number of wickets but the scores are 31-30, and Milliken Mills (Unionville) beat Pierre Elliott Trudeau (Markham) by 15 runs.

The regular season saw each team play four matches in one of two zonal groups, A and B. The last game saw Bur Oak make 106 in a 21-run win over Milliken Mills (85) on October 25th. Jean Vanier completed a season of four losses with defeat, that same day, against Bayview SS (Richmond Hill) in a 33-32 summary score.

Zone A ended with Bur Oak SS top due to 4 wins in 4 games. Middlefield ended 3 with wins and 1 loss, and the other three sides each had a record of 1 win and 3 defeats. Those schools were Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Milliken Mills and Stephen Lewis SS.

Maple HS went undefeated with 4 wins in Zone B, followed by Bayview SS 3 wins/1 loss, Richmond Hill HS 2 wins/2 losses, Bill Crothers SS (Unionville) 1 win/3 defeats and Jean Vanier CHS with 4 defeats.

Matches are scheduled for 15 overs per side.
