Canada beat Papua New Guinea by 6 runs in their second match of the T20 World Qualifier.
Gunasekera and Patel got Canada off to a good start, taking 34 off the first three overs. Gunasekera (17) played on with the score on 34, but Kumar kept up the pace. Patel made 34 from 25 balls with six boundaries before he was stumped. Cheema smashed Kila for three boundaries from consecutive balls, including a massive six but was then run out – 93/3 in the 11th over. Hansra made a useful contribution of 22 from 13 balls, and Kumar made an excellent 57 from 44 balls before falling in the last over.
The final total of 167 provided just enough. PNG passed 50 without loss before Ura was well caught by Gordon, bringing former England Test player Geraint Jones to the wicket. Vala made 52 before being caught in the deep off Hansra, and tight bowling kept PNG just behind the required run rate. PNG needed 34 runs off the last three overs, and Junaid Siddiqui took the crucial wicket of Jones (39). Osinde and Cheema bowled the last two overs, and PNG fell two runs short.
Canada play Hong Kong tomorrow.
