Canada heading towards 2nd loss at WCL tournament

Canada lost Scotland by 69 runs in their second match in the World Cricket League tournament in the Netherlands. A good performance in the field restricted Scotland to 236 from their 50 overs but this was not matched by the batsmen. When rain stopped play Canada needed 158 from 29 overs with only 4 wickets in hand. Once a revised target was set for a 26 over innings, the Canadians needed a near impossible 117 runs from 6 overs and fell well short.

Canada made no changes to the side that lost to Afghanistan, and after Bagai lost the toss found themselves in the field. First blood went to Hooper, after having Momssen dropped in his first over, bowled Hairs in the 4th over. Chohan as usual bowled well, conceding just 13 runs from his opening spell of six overs, and then Cheema and Bhatti combined for successive maidens as the run-rate slowed. Tight bowling put pressure on the batsmen and this eventually told as Momssen top-edged Bhatti to Hooper at third man, and then Maiden tried to go over the top and holed out. Bhatti’s final figures were an impressive 10-2-27-2.Berrington, however wrested the initiative away from Canada with an excellent half century from 72 balls, and with McCallum took Scotland towards a respectable total. They put on 124 before Berrington was bowled by Cheema for 67, and a late flurry from McCallum (90*) took the total to 236/4 from 50 overs.

In reply Cheema continued with his poor run of form as a wild shot resulted in a skied catch to square leg in the first over. Surkari was bowled through the gate by a good one but Patel played his shots and quickly moved along to 37* out of 49/2 from 10 overs before rain intervened. A 52 minute break was to Scotland’s advantage as Patel fell directly after play resumed with no addition to his score, and Barnett was caught from a leading edge in the same over. Canada were 55/4 and in deep trouble, which got deeper when Hansra was bowled by one that kept low and the in-form Bagai was unluckily bowled as he tried to kick the ball away from the stumps as he was about to play on – 70/6. Rain intervened again with Canada on 79/6, but too late to save them with Canada 80 runs behind on Duckworth-Lewis calculations. Once calculations were done, the Canadians needed a near impossible 117 runs from 6 overs in what become a 26 over game. Dhaniram swung at the second ball after play restarted and was caught. Bhatti and Hooper hit out but when the innings closed on 126 for 9, Canada were 69 runs short.
