“Though cricket is a hugely popular sport in his birthplace of India, 16-year-old Ankur Shahi can only name a handful of fellow cricketers in Thunder Bay.
Shahi has played the sport since he could hold a bat, both in cricket-loving India and with members of the southeast Asian community in Toronto. But when he and his family moved to Thunder Bay four years ago, pick-up cricket games became a thing of the past.
“In a small community like this, no one knows what cricket is,” he says. That’s why the high school student started a kid’s cricket camp this summer. “I thought I’d introduce it to the younger children and they’d spread it throughout the community,” he says.
