Evin Lewis ton carries T & T to first day lead against Canada

February 3, 2013: Day 1 of 3 closing scores (National Cricket Centre, Cueva, Trinidad):
Canada 134 all out (44.4 overs); Trinidad & Tobago 194 for 3 wickets (42 overs)
Trinidad and Tobago openers Evin Lewis (101) and Justin Guillen (58) had a 131 run stand that ended just three runs short of Canada’s 134 all out on the opening day of a three-day match at the National Cricket Centre in Cueuva, Trinidad on Sunday. Guillen was caught at sllp off spinner Junaid Siddiqui who had top scored with 34, batting at number nine, for Canada. Siddiqui later had Lewis caught in the deep after the left-handed opener had reached 101. Lewis’s innings included 19 boundaries. Jason Mohammed ended the day on 25 not out.

Canada won the toss and elected to bat. Six Canadian batsmen made a start, reaching double figures but there was not a major contribution in the top of the order. The two opening bats each fell to Shannon Gabriel. Hiral Patel was bowled for 17 and Ruvindu Gunaskera holed out for 19. Nitish Kumar made 22 batting at number five. Siddiqui’s 34 runs were made during an eighth wicket stand with wicketkeeper Hamza Tariq (17) and a ninth wicket stand with Manny Aulakh (10). Tariq became Gabriel’s third wicket, the pacer ending with three for 35 from nine overs. Siddiqui’s innings ended after 58 balls, caught off Yannick Cariah, who then trapped Aulakh leg-before wicket. Cariah had picked up two wickets for no runs from four balls to close Canada’s first innings of 2013 for 134 runs.
It was certainly not the first time in the last seven or more years during a modern era of great potential for Canadian cricket that the opening day of a tour has been a bit of a disappointment. But, from a Canadian perspective, it brings the hope of the team battling back over the last two days of the match.
Viewed from a T & T perspective day two brings the prospect of some solid batting from overnight partners Jason Mohammed (25 not our) and skipper Denesh Ramdin (1 not out), plus others to come as part of the preparations for upcoming West Indies regional competitions by the Regional T20 Champions.
