Senior Boys Schools Indoor Cricket news from Peel Region

The Senior Boys section of the Region of Peel Secondary Schools indoor cricket season began on April 3,2013. The fate of Girls and Junior Boys indoor cricket remains to be seen. At present there are just four schools registered for each of those events, which is deemed no enough to support a league. But there are eight teams competing in the North Division of the Senior Boys and nine in the South Division..
All seventeen teams had played at least one game by the close of Wednesday April 10. North Peel and Turner Fenton top the North Division at this early stage with two wins from two games. Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Stephen Lewis similarly head the South Division with two wins from two games.

This week there are four matches scheduled on each of Tuesday (April 16), Wednesday (April 17) and Thursday (April 18) plus three games set for Friday (April 19). The league schedule, or regular season to comply with North American sporting terminology, continues until Thursday May 2. The top two from each division progress to the semi-finals, set for May 8. The final is scheduled for May 10. A playoff with the Toronto District School Board indoor champions is on the schedule for May 21, after the Victoria Day holiday.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel scored 49 in 8 overs, then bowled out Applewood for 20 to win by 29 runs. Father Goetz made 58 all out in 8 overs, but Mount Carmel reached a winning 59 for five wickets with one over to spare. This was a close encounter, as six outs are “all out” in this version of indoor cricket, but Father Goetz had a tougher time against Stephen Lewis. The Stephen Lewis side hit 77 for three in 8 overs, then bundled out Father Goetz for 16 in six overs. Stephen Lewis also beat St Joseph by 32 runs: Stephen Lewis 77 for 5 (8 overs); St Joseph 45 for 5 (8 overs).
Turner Fenton edged out Heart Lake with three balls to spare, but romped to victory over St Margueritte d’Youville in the North Division. Heart Lake tallied 70 for four wickets in 8 overs, but Turner Fenton responded with 71 for five wickets from 7.3 overs. Margueritte d’Youville was held to 38 for five wickets in eight overs before Turner Fenton romped to 42 for one wicket in 3.1 overs North Park (62-4) beat Harold M. Brathwaite (56 all out) by 6 runs and followed with a 29 run win over Sandalwood. North Park reached 65 for 3 in 8 overs, then limited Sandalwood to 36 for 3 in 8 overs.
Harold M. Brathwaite hit 77 for 3 in 7.3 overs to edge out Louise Arbour (74-4, 8 overs) in a high scoring game. By contrast, Margueritte D’Youville were out for 18 (3.8 overs) against David Suzuki, who hit a winning 19 for two wickets in 2.5 overs.
So, best wishes to all the players, coaches, unpires and scorers, as well as thanks to the scores reporting system used by the Region of Peel Secondary Schools that tries to push schools into timely reporting of scores. The central admin people, of whom there are probably few, can get the same day scores from a range of sports out to media outlets with a chance of inclusion, subject to space on the sports pages.

This round-up reflects the divisional leaders in the Peel Region senior boys indoor cricket include the results of fifteen of sixteen matches scheduled up to and including April 10, 2012. The portion of results reported against games scheduled might, based on experience, could be deemed “above average” by Canadian cricketing standards. Although the National Hockey League (NHL), or even the Indian Premier League (IPL), might not be too impressed if the results of an opening day encounter were not known a couple of weeks later. Perhaps if it was April 1 – April Fool’s Day – this might round off with the notion that a secret team existed, such as the Goa Go-Getters, whose success in some secret matches behind closed doors had been so impressive that the Go-Getters would now be added to the standings. Feel free to decide for yourself if the Go-Getters would be joining the IPL or the NHL. (EN)
