It may be the best thing that’s ever happened for cricket’s future in the GTA: a bunch of white kids, many of them baseball players, from an upscale neighbourhood beating Toronto’s powerhouse school teams.
And with Wednesday’s announcement of the Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament expanding to four cities across the GTA, many insiders might secretly be hoping that Lambton-Kingsway Middle School in Etobicoke wins it all this year.
“It was shocking. We came back and people couldn’t believe we won,” says Dilhan Kuru, one of the school’s coaches, recalling the reaction after his team won its division championship last year, following their loss in the finals of the Mayor’s Tournament.
