Woburn CI wins the second Toronto East Boys High Schools Group in CIMA Event

Woburn Collegiate Institute won the second Toronto East Boys High Schools Group on Friday (May 17) with wins against SATEC @ W.A. Porter CI (by eight wickets), Agincourt (by five wickets, but off the last available ball) and Lester B. Pearson (by 25 runs). The three other teams in this group within the CIMA Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament each closed with records of won one and lost two.

Agincourt and Woburn had each opened with a win, then provided an exciting game which went down to the wire as Darshil Patel was bowled by Birinder Lobana Patel for 4. Just two balls were left, but Hrutvik Patel hit a two square on the off-side and followed with a drive through extra cover that each brought two runs, and victory for Woburn by five wickets from the last ball.
Woburn completed an unbeaten trio of games with a 25 run win against Lester B. Pearson. Possibly the disappointment of the narrow loss to Woburn impacted Agincourt who closed with an eight wicket loss to SATEC. SATEC reached a winning 55 for two wickets with five balls to spare after Agincourt had reached 54 for five from ten overs.
Manula Adihetty scored 28 not out and had support from Birinder Lobana 11 and Jawad Mahmood 10 not out in Agincourt’s 62 for three wickets from ten overs against Woburn. Archit took two wickets for six from his two overs. Jawad Mahmood followed with two quick wickets, removing both Woburn’s opening batsmen in a return of two for seven from his two alloted overs. Kuldeep Raval made 19 but for was then run out. Deep Panchal supported with 15 runs before being caught off Zain Akhtar. Rahil Gandhi hit a boundary through the offside, but then fell to a well judged catch at deep square leg for 7. Darshil Patel was bowled in the last over, as previously mentioned, to setup a dramatic end. The last ball drive through extra cover by Hrutvik Patel beat the field and allowed Woburn to complete two runs for the win.

Both schools did face ten overs, as is shown in the current version of the completed scorecard on the CIMA Canada website. There is not much time between short games, including T20 tournaments with multiple games on the same day for scorers and background helpers, and a couple of bowlers had been shown as having two overs each in the summary but had only bowled one over each. So anyone who may have thought Woburn faced twelve overs rather than ten on an originally posted scorecard need not fear there was artificial assistance. The fact that the West pitch was under repair meant a walk up and over the hill for one team to the North ground at Sunnybrook Park, and not a mere switch to using the west facing seats, rather than the East facing seats between the East and West pitches that is often the case in these school cricket events involving four teams.
Woburn will presumably play David and Mary Thomson, who won the first East group earlier last week, on a date to be announced for the Toronto Boys High School CIBC Trophy. David and Mary Thomson won both games in what appears to have been a three team group, but the scores in a summary chart are reversed when compared with the match scorecard.
Friday’s East group standings were: Woburn W 3, L 0, Pts 6 NRR +1.30; Agincourt W 1 L 2 Pts 2, NRR +0.10; SATEC W 1, L 2, Pts 2, NRR -0.42; and Lester B. Pearson W 1, L 2, Pts 2, NRR -1.00. [NRR being net run rate].
