North Park Vikings (Brampton) won the GTA CIBC Trophy as Boys High Schools champions with a one wicket win against Stephen Lewis (Mississauga) in the final on Saturday afternoon.  North Park scored 78 for nine to overtake Stephen Lewis’s score of 77 all out (17.1 overs). Boys champions

The showcase game of the 2013 CIMA Schools Cricket Tournament, the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Boys High Schools Final, ended in a one wicket win for the Brampton champions North Park Secondary School against Mississauga champions Stephen Lewis Secondary Secondary School. Some of the batsmen on both sides will probably be disappointed not to have made bigger individual contributions, but credit should be given to the bowlers for putting pressure on the batsman with some steady performances.

Stephen Lewis’s opening pair took the score to 31 in the seventh over before Muqtadir Syed was caught for eight off Max Joshi’s bowling. Five runs later Bilal Khan was caught for 21, also off Joshi’s bowling. After the fall of the two opening batsmen only Talha Tabish reached double figures. He made 10, batting a number five, before being run out, at which stage Stephen Lewis was on 70 for six in the sixteenth over. Six batsmen were caught, one was stumped and the innings concluded with the second of two runouts at the end of the eighteenth over.

Max Joshi took three wickets for six runs from three overs and Sabes Rasanayagam took three wickets for fifteen runs from four overs in the Stephen Lewis innings. Both players then opened the batting for the North Park Vikings.

Rasanayagem fell leg-before wicket to Ali Irfan in the fifth over. He made seven runs out of a running total of twenty, so the batsman were on course for the required approximate scoring rate of four runs an over. Max Joshi was then caught for 13 off Muqtadir Syed’s bowling (28 for two, seventh over). Another wicket fell cheaply, then Syed had Karan Patel caught for 12 to leave North Park on 46 for four.

The hot sun gave way to a sudden summer storm, but play was soon resumed and it proved to be a battle of nerves between bowlers and batsmen before a single by the last batsman gave North Park the championship.

This game was covered by Rogers Community Channel cameras, which will be covering Cricket Canada’s National Cricket League this summer, according to the word at Sunnybrook Park on Saturday. Rogers had provided financial support for this inaugural Greater Toronto Area version of the CIMA School Cricket Championship, as had CIBC after whom the various CIBC Trophies for City and overall GTA champions are named. Dwight Drummond of CBC acted as master of ceremonies for the presentation of the trophies to the City winners, and the GTA Girls High School trophy. Some other cameras were on hand and a good smattering of sponsors banners adorned the area around the presentations and scorers tents.

Toronto Councillor Doug Ford, brother of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, was on hand for these presentations, and clearly enjoyed his time speaking with each of the boys and girls high school teams that played on Saturday.

So the Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association was proud to provide both finalists in this outdoor event, and to provide the winner of the Girls High School Championship. Especially as cricket is played as an indoor sport with six (girls) and eight (boys) overs per side restrictions for the indoor version. One of the Markham representatives, where there is an outdoor championship played in the fall, was pleased to say how the number of participating cricket schools has risen in three or four years from three schools into double figures.

The CIMA Canada President was delighted that in a difficult year for the Ontario schools due to labour disputes, an initial target of having 50 schools competing within three years of this CIMA Schools Cricket being launched had been exceeded. Some 58 schools took part in 2013, which reflects the tremendous enthusiasm for cricket of the players, the teachers and principals who support the game. He paid tribute to the events sponsors, including CIBC, Rogers as sponsors and for providing coverage of the Boys High Schools Final, and to the publishers of the Toronto Sun and Toronto Metro for advertising space and tournament coverage, and the various School Boards, School Athletic Associations, volunteers and organizers.

At the end of the day, not many people were involved in running the tournament and this event includes developmental aspects of Canadian cricket in the Greater Toronto Area that attempt to improve some of the existing standards, as well as broaden the participation and knowledge about cricket.

There is a new target of getting 100 teams involved, which is achievable based on known and growing interest levels.

GTA Playoffs for 2013 CIMA/CIBC School Cricket Trophy (June 1, 2013)
The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) playoffs in the 2013 Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Girls and Boys High School cricket tournament were played at Sunnybrook Park, Toronto on Saturday June 1, 2013.
The GTA Girls High School Final for the CIBC Trophy was won by Father Michael Goetz of Mississauga with a win by twelve runs against York Memorial of Toronto.
The GTA Boys High School Final for the CIBC Trophy was won by North Park of Brampton, thanks to a narrow one wicket win with two balls to spare against Stephen Lewis of Mississauga. The Boys final was played in the afternoon and followed semi-final wins during the morning by North Park (against North Albion of Toronto) and Stephen Lewis (against Bur Oak of Markham).
This was the third year of the CIMA School cricket tournament, but the first year in which schools from beyond the City of Toronto participated. It was the second year in which CIBC has been the lead financial sponsor, hence the individual city and overall GTA Championship final are each played for a CIBC Trophy.
The GTA Boys High School Final was filmed by Rogers Community Channel (Toronto). Rogers also provided financial support for this tournament.
