The first cricket tournament held in Northern Ontario is taking over Amelia Park this weekend. Three out-of-town teams from Markham-Toronto, Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie are joining the host North Bay Multicultural Cricket Club for the two-day event, which included an opening ceremony Saturday morning with remarks from Mayor Al McDonald and North Bay and District Multicultural Centre executive director Don Curry. The Thunder Bay Warriors opened the tournament Saturday morning and afternoon with the first game of the weekend against a team from the Markham Toronto Cricket League. It was the Warriors’ first-ever game — not to mention the team’s first-ever win, although a “controversial one” at that, said Thunder Bay player Ankur Shahr — after forming just a few months ago.
