Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School were crowned York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) Varsity Boys Division 1 Cricket Champions on Thursday (October 17) thanks to a six wicket win over Bill Crothers Secondary School in the Championship Final. Bill Crothers struggled to 37 all out from 14.3 overs. Eight of the Bill Crothers team were bowled, four falling to Trudeau’s captain Kush Razdan. Number three batsman Mohammed top-scored with 14 not out.
Haseeb Ashfaq bowled two of the Crothers’ batsmen, then hit a quick 13 batting at number three to put Trudeau into a strong position. Ashfaq was caught at long-on going for another big hit to possibly end the game. The long-on fielder held another catch a few balls later, but two singles at the start of the eighth over gave the Trudeau school the win.
Bur Oak Secondary School beat Richmond Hill High School by four runs in the playoff to decide third place. Richmond Hill made 61 for five wickets from the allotted 15 overs chasing Bur Oak’s 65 for five wickets. Opening bat Zora was a key performer for Bur Oak with 42 not out.
The matches to decide the lower placings are scheduled for 9 am and 12.15pm this Friday (October 18) at Fairtree Community Park, Markham.
