Cricket Culminating – grass roots development in Toronto

I had the privilege of watching an end of term exercise for a particular gym class. The students were given a project to come up with a game, explain it to the class and play it for a brief period. They are marked on the process and execution.
My friend Guddu Singh, a Hall Monitor at Emery Collegiate found out about this project when three girls, new students to Emery CI, came to him asking for a pair of bats and indoor balls. Mr. Singh, took it upon himself to give a short session to them, (see videos) About a week later, they presented to the class and came up with a basic sketch of an indoor game. I was impressed with the energy they presented with, and the enthusiasm showed during the demonstration.

Emery Collegiate is situated in the Weston and Finch community and has over the years produced graduates who have gone onto university and college and still maintain their cricketing roots. Last year, Mr. Singh and I introduced a girl’s lunch time programme and managed to have a tournament, drawing students primarily from Grades 9 and 10. At present, we will be seeking to restart this programme at the end of examinations in February and run till spring.
Last year, the girls played the lunchtime tournaments, it was apparent the inherent love of the game drove them to compete with cricketing spirit. I am hoping that the present culminating will lead to more girls coming out to the lunch sessions in a few days.
They truly deserve full marks for effort and exposure.
