Canada hopes of World Cup qualification were dashed by a magnificent 175 by Calum Macleod who led Scotland to a massive 342/9. Both his score and the team total set one-day international records for Scotland. Canada managed just 171 in reply and finish the group stage with one win and three losses.
Khurram Chohan made an early breakthrough but Scotland made a steady start putting fifty on the board in eight overs and 100 in 17 without further loss. Machan and Macleod put on 144 before Kumar had Machan caught for 68. Macleod completed his century at a run per ball out of 200 in 33 overs. His next fifty came twice as fast as he led Scotland past 300. Khurram Chohan took four more wickets as the Scots hit out towards the end of the innings to take 5/68.
In reply Canada lost a wicket in the first over, and fell to 68/6. Only 71 from Hamza Tariq kept the score respectable as they were bowled out for 171. Canada will thus miss out on the next World Cup after qualifying for the last three.
Canada captain Jimmy Hansra was disappointed with the result. “Today it was just Calum’s day. A batsman getting 175 is not something you see every day. He really took the game away from us.”
“To be fair, both our batting and bowling didn’t perform in this tournament,” he said.
