Canada sinks Uganda – now face Netherlands for 7th place

Canada beat Uganda by 59 runs under the D/L method when rain stopped play at Bay Oval No. 2, Mount Maunganui on Sunday in New Zealand. Canada’s bowlers kept the Ugandan batsmen under control in the early going, Khurram Chohan taking one wicket for eight from six overs and Jeremy Gordon conceding just six runs from six overs. A third wicket stand of 61 in about 20 overs proved the heart of Uganda’s eventual 149 all out from 49.5 overs. Chohan topped and tailed the innings to close with two for 26 from 9.5 overs while left arm spinner Parth Desai took four for 29 from ten overs.

Nitish Kumar was caught for 17 from the first ball of the ninth over with Canada on 33. Ruvindu Gunasekera continued on to 52 not out and Jimmy Hansra made 43 not out as Canada reached 119 for one wicket when rain halted and eventually ended play after 29 overs.

Canada will now meet the Netherlands on New Zealand’s Tuesday in the play-off for seventh place. The Dutch bowled held Nepal to 171 for nine then clipped 171 for three from 31.5 overs at Bay Oval No. 1 to win by seven wickets. Opener Eric Szwarczynski made 56 and captain Peter Borren 45 not out for the Netherlands. Sharad Vesawkar top-scored for Nepal with 42 after four of the top five in the batting order failed to reach double figures.
