Cricket catching on in Sault

Cricket anyone? Locals responded to that call from Duane Moleni, who organized a demonstration of cricket during the seventh annual Passport to Unity Festival that was held in Sault Ste. Marie in the spring of 2013. Moleni grew up playing the bat-and-ball game in New Zealand, so he was eager to continue playing after arriving in the Sault eight years ago.
“I wanted to be able to play something that gives me that taste of home,” he said.
So much interest was generated during the Unity demonstration that a group was formed.
“The Sault Ste. Marie Cricket Club is borne out of this exhibition last year,” Moleni said.
The new club has a core group of between 20 and 30 men who have been strapping on pads and swinging bats on an outdoor field in the city, and indoor at Algoma University’s George Leach Centre and the Northern Community Centre.
