Cricket-playing students want to boost sport’s popularity in Canada

“Pratik Marathe was born in India and grew up in Dubai, so even he admits it’s unexpected that he mastered how to play cricket in Canada. The 20-year-old chemical-engineering student at McMaster University immigrated to Canada with his dad when he was 10 years old, an age when many kids decide whether to play soccer, hockey or basketball. Despite his peers’ interest in these sports, Mr. Marathe chose to pursue one he had grown up with. “I stuck to cricket, just because it’s part of my family, it’s part of my culture and we watch it all the time,” he said.

The Mississauga resident is one of 12 Toronto-area students who flew to London Friday night on a Cricket Across the Pond scholarship, a City of Toronto-sponsored program that sends skilled cricket players to Britain to play matches, watch some of the world’s best cricket players and learn about the history of the sport.”
