Old Wimbledonians win RBC CIMA Mayors’ XI tour opener

Old Wimbledonians 168/9 (20 ov) beat RBC CIMA Mayors’ XI 136/8 (20 ov) by 32 runs

Old Wimbledonians, seemingly including a mix of players from the Saturday first and second elevens, beat the RBC CIMA Mayor’s XI by 32 runs in the tourists first game on Sunday (July 20, 2014). Old Wimbledonians scored 168/9 from 20 overs led by 60 from former Canadian national team player Karun Jethi. C.P. Singh (who has played for Rajahstan Royals in the Indian Premier League) scored 22 and three others pitched in with 10 to 16 runs from the bat.
The RBC CIMA Mayors XI responded with 136/8. Zaeem Sagri scored 31 and Muhammad Shahzad made 30 batting at three and four. Both opening bats, Pushinder Sandhu and Rohit Malhotra, scored 14 and captain Armaan Kapoor chipped in with 18.

The opening batsmen for Old Wimbledonians seemed, from a distance based on web-site scorecards, Redelinghuys and Markham, to have been the two top scorers for the club’s Saturday second XI against Old Rutlishians. Dion Redelinghuys had scored 44 not out as Old Rutlishians Peter Day took 7 wickets for 22. Will Markham scored 28 of 50/3 that became 74/9 but recovered to 126 all out. Old Wimbledonians first eleven lost early wickets in league action on Saturday, including those of Karun Jethi (0) and CP Singh (1), stumbled to 76 all out and lost by five wickets. Jethi captured four of the five Old Rutlishians wickets that did fall.

So Sunday’s game was possibly a challenge for the tourists just over one day after arriving in London. The tour continued on Monday with a game against a Reigate Priory XI. (EN)
