Canada beat Uganda

Canada played Uganda in their fourth match of the WCL II tournament. Canada recorded a much needed 111-run win, thanks to a century from Nitish Kumar, supported by an unbeaten 63 from Jimmy Hansra, then four wickets apiece from Pervez and Dutta. Canada, currently placed third in the table, will play first placed Namibia in their final round-robin match.

Openers Cheema and Kumar put 50 on the board for Canada after 10.4 overs and progressed to 68/0 against Uganda after 15 overs. Cheema 35* and Kumar 33* at the 15 over mark. Canada is fielding an unchanged side at the Affies Park ground where Canada beat Kenya in round two. Cheema was caught for 36 (76/1, 16.4 ov) off slow-left arm spinner SSenyondo, a boundary by Kumar took him to 51* (18.3 ov) and a boundary from Gunasekera took Canada to 103/1 to end the 20th over. Gunasekera made 30 in a partnership of 73 before the second wicket fell at 149. Nitish Kumar reached his century from 92 balls, but was caught behind for 104 from the first ball of the 37th over. Jimmy Hansra took up the attack, and the score continued to mount despite the loss of Dhaliwal (3) and Wijeratne (16). He ended up unbeaten on 63, hitting two sixes in the 50th over to put Canada in a strong position at 293/6.
Pervez had Kyobe leg before from the 5th ball of the Uganda innings, and took a second wicket to reduce them to 27/2. He then had Mukasa caught for 24, and Canada were well on top. Phillimon Selowa took the attack to the spinners when they came on, taking 13 runs from a Dutta over. He and Masaba put on 68, before Dutta broke the partnership having Musaba caught. Dutta then trapped Sematimba leg before, and took the critical wicket of Selowa, caught by Kumar for 70 – 133/6. Desai got into the act with a wicket, then Dutta took his fourth – his final analysis was 4/52 from 10 overs. Canada needed a quick win to improve net run rate but a 34 run 9th wicket partnership proved an obtacle until Pervez returned to the attack with immediate effect – he finshed with 4/23. Desai wrapped up the innings for a 111 run win.

In other matches Nepal beat Namibia for just 142, and then overhauled their total for the loss of 7 wickets. The Netherlands took just 31 overs to pass Kenya’s 212/9, with the big win helping their net run rate. This leaves Nepal and Namibia tied with three wins and a loss, and the Netherlands and Canada on 2 wins, Uganada and Kenya with one win each.
The final round of matches sees Canada play Namibia, Nepal playing Kenya and Netherlands taking on Uganda. Net run rate is likely to be important in determining the two finalists (who will be promoted to division 1), but equally important in determining 5th/6th placings, which come with relegation. Namibia and Nepal are almost certain to make the final unless they experience one sided losses impacting their net run rate, while Canada will have to ensure they do not drop to 5th or lower, possible if they lose badly to Namibia and either Uganda or Kenya record big wins.
