The Honourable Thing to do

A commentary by Mike Kendall, President, Ontario Cricket Association

The revelation in the South Asian Focus newspaper this week, has been nothing short of ‘Shocking’. Here is the link in case you have not seen it. The article deals with, among other items, an auditor’s report about the MLCC accounts. It is referring to an Auditor’s report, commissioned by the current MLCC President Basdeo Maharaj, about transactions un-accounted for or without proper back up documentation. I have since, had the opportunity to examine the report. The discrepancy is staggering and the Auditor’s comments, alarming. This is not a hearsay or off the cuff remark by someone but is a certified document, backed by proper accounting procedures, outlined and performed by a CA firm. I understand that the matter has been taken up with the police. This report will have far reaching effects as it pertains to a time period when MLCC hosted the Quadrangular Tournament. A lot of entities including Cricket Canada, may be dragged in to this investigation and will have to provide answers. The President of the MLCC at the time was Mr. Ranjit Saini, who is currently the President of Cricket Canada. Any fallout from and during the investigation, will obviously have an effect on CC reputation as well. The dignity of the office of the President of Cricket Canada, must be preserved and Mr. Saini must do the right thing, before the authorities come knocking on the door. The Honourable thing for him to do is to step aside and clear the air. Once he does that, only then he can claim the moral authority to lead the national organization.

Mohan (Mike) Kendall, President, Ontario Cricket Association.
