Cricket more than a sport for most

“When you have people coming in as immigrants, it’s really important to engage them and help them become a part of the community and sports like this (help),” said Abraham Somavarapha, director for development with the Nova Scotia Cricket Association.
“In the long term, there’s a huge role for organizations like the NSCA to take part in immigration programs and sport development programs.”
The cricket community helps in more ways than helping immigrants adjust to Canada.
Some more veteran players can help newcomers with language skills and have the connections to find them a good job.
“I’m super impressed by the community they’ve developed,” said Somavarapha, who’s been working with the NSCA for only a couple of months. “It’s given me the opportunity to be a part of something that I love.”
