Cricket Newfoundland and Labrador recently partnered with Provincial Historic Sites to present a demonstration of cricket in the historic community of Trinity, about 250 kilometres from St. John’s. This is the third year for cricket in Trinity, and was again a success. Cricket was played in Trinity around the end of the 19th century, with the local team hosting teams from St. John’s, and the community museum has photos of that team, plus two old cricket bats.
The area provided was small, and for safety reasons, tennis balls ands soft cricket balls were used to put on a demonstration after which sufficient spectators were recruited to put on an 8/ side match, won by “team Trinity”. Comedian Mark Critch was an enthusiastic spectator, and was persuaded to demonstrate his own cricket skills as seen on screen in “The Grand Seduction”.
