The decline of Canadian cricket on the international stage is perhaps summed up by the fact that Tim Wigmore’s comprehensive review of Associates cricket in 2016 features Ireland, Afghanistan, Scotland, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Neapl, Netherlands, UAE, Kenya, USA, Rwanda, Germany, Namibia, and Oman- Canada does not merit a single word. The lack of international fixtures is one reason perhaps, and that is related to the decline in performance seen over the past few years. Wigmore is well worth reading for his analysis of issues confronting the Associates:-
“In a year of fragmentation all over the globe, the fissures within the Associate world became gaping. While Afghanistan and Ireland enjoyed unprecedented riches and opportunities, the other 93 Associate and Affiliate members of the ICC were left feeling more marginalised than ever.”
