Mississauga SS crowned 2018 GTA Boys HS Champs

Mississauga Secondary School (SS) won the 2018 Greater Toronto Area Boys High Schools Canadian Tire Trophy with a four wicket win against Toronto’s North Albion Collegiate Institute (CI) on Saturday (June 2, 2018). Four Boys High School teams were in the hunt for the championship following individual city and region championships around the GTA.
Mississauga SS, the 2018 Mississauga City champions, beat losing Mississauga finalists Stephen Lewis SS in one of the morning’s semi-finals. North Albion CI, the 2018 Toronto City runner- up, beat 2018 Brampton champion North Park SS in the other semi-final.
The CIMA Mayor’s Toronto championship had been won by Marc Garneau CI earlier in the week, but, due to cricket playing commitments in mainstream GTA cricket leagues, Marc Garneau was unable to field a team in the GTA playoffs. Middlefield CI won the 2018 York Region CIMA Mayor’s championship but were also unable to participate in the GTA playoffs for the GTA Canadian Tire Trophy. This opened the door for North Albion and Mississauga runner- up Stephen Lewis SS to play in the GTA semi-finals.
There has been a lot of schools cricket in Toronto and the Peel Region in the last 2 to 3 months. The spring sees indoor cricket championships in Toronto under the jurisdiction of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) banner and in Peel under the broad-based Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association (ROPSSAA). The ROPSSAA includes schools under the jurisdictions of the Peel District School Board, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and some indpendend schools.
There is, at present, no outdoor cricket championship under the ROPSSAA banner but the TDSB has an outdoor cricket championship for Boys that has been in existence for several years. The TDSB’s outdoor cricket championship for girls that began recently.
The York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) has operated an outdoor cricket championship for several years that is played in the Autumn term. Maple Secondary School beat Middlefield in the YRAA 2017-2018 championship final last October.
CIMA Mayor’s 2018 GTA Boys HS Final

Left-hander Muhammad Kamal (Mississauga SS) unleashes a powerful drive v North Albion CI in Saturday’s GTA Boys HS Final.

North Albion scored 115/5 from 15 overs in the GTA Boys High School final on Saturday afternoon on the north ground at Batsman Park. A strong performance from left-hand opening bat Muhammad Kamal then gave Mississauga SS the upper hand and a boundary after 12.5 overs brought victory and the Canadian Tire Trophy. Muhammad Kamal hit 3 sixes then was out in an eventful over that firmly tipped the scales in favour of his team. Some 61 runs were scored when Muhammad Kamal was facing the bowling but some of those runs were extras, such as a no-ball.
It is hoped that more detailed scores from these GTA playoffs will be available during the coming days. Saturday’s schedule also included Boys and Girls division championships for Middle Schools.

The annual CIMA Toronto Mayor’s Spirit of Cricket event is scheduled for June 30, 2018 at Sunnybrook Park, Toronto.
