York Region Schools Cricket Rolling Along

Outdoor cricket has continued under the banner of the York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) despite some damp weather last week and the possibility of school closures that hovered until a new a new contractual agreement was signed on Sunday (6 October 2019) to avert the possibility of school closures. Within the YRAA cricketing boundaries, five of the seven competing schools are in the hunt for a top four placing in the regular season and a spot in the playoffs.
It came as a slight surprise to find the scores last night as an earlier message seemed to indicate all games were off on Tuesday (8 October). I was considering a trip to the Markham Fairgrounds area for the 3pm games but early afternoon signal problems on the east-west subway dented the prospect of arriving for the start of Middlefield Collegiate Institute (CI) v Huron Heights Secondary School (SS) and Bur Oak Secondary SS v Bill Crothers SS. So I went home, saw a message about no games on Tuesday and felt there was a possibility of seeing all four games on a re-scheduled date next week. I suspect the promising weather on Tuesday made a difference for the cricketers.
Last Week’s Matches
Bill Hoggarth SS beat Bur Oak SS 54-53 in last Wednesday’s (2 Oct) only game. It was the third win of the season for Bill Hoggarth.
On Thursday (3 Oct) there were wins for Maple HS against Bill Crothers (36-35) and Father McGivney Catholic Academy (CA) against Huron Heights SS (24-23) in the 3pm matches. Maple HS and Father McGivney CA moved to 3 wins from 3 games based on these results and the possibility that the two scheduled 12.30pm games were not played.
The 3 October 12.30 pm games, currently without any scores, would have pitted Bill Crothers SS against Father McGivney CA and Maple HS against Huron Heights. If I had made it to the grounds on Tuesday then I would have been able to confirm if those two matches had been played or if they are to be re-scheduled.
Two Tuesday Wins Boost Bur Oak
Bur Oak SS beat Middlefield CI (58-57) this Tuesday (8 Oct) and followed with a 3pm game win against Bill Crothers SS (72-71). The wins moved Bur Oak SS to 3 wins and 2 losses with one game to play, albeit a tough one against Maple HS.
Huron Heights struck 115 runs and secured a first win of the season when restricting Bill Crothers SS to 59 in the 12.30pm matches. Middlefield CI bounced back with a 72 run win against Huron Heights in the 3pm matches.
Remaining Games in Race for Playoff Places
Thursday’s ( 10 October) first pair of matches includes the key match-up of defending champions Maple HS and Father McGiveny CA, each with 3 wins from 3 games to date. Last year’s finalists Middlefield CI (Won 2, Lost 2) plays Bill Crothers in the second of Thursday’s midday games.
The second pair of Thursday games pair Maple HS with Bur Oak SS (W 3, L 2) while Father McGivney CA and Middlefield CI lock horns in the tussle for playoff berths.
