The indoor school cricket season in the Peel Region (Ontario) enters the closing phase of the regular season during the next eight days. The Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association (ROPSSAA) includes schools from the Peel Region School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board. Indoor cricket is played in the spring term and this year includes one Varsity Girls division, one Junior Boys Division and a Senior Boys competition from which the leading schools from four area divisions advance to the playoffs.
ROPSSAA – Varsity Girls
Humberview Secondary School (SS) head the Varsity Girls division with 4 wins from 4 games and complete regular season play against Heart Lake SS (W2, L1) today (Monday, April 24, 2017). Sandalwood SS and Father Michael Goetz CSS, like Heart Lake, currently have records of 2 wins and 1 loss in these closing days of the regular season. Mentor College’s season has ended with 1 win and 4 losses. TL Kennedy SS (W0, L4) has one game to play.
ROPSSAA – Junior Boys
Central Peel SS leads the Junior Boys Division with 4 wins from 4 games. North Park SS has won 3 and lost 2, one of those defeats being against Central Peel. Central Peel scored 47/6 from 6 overs, North Peak made 44/4 from 6 overs. Castlebook SS has 2 wins and 1 loss, Port Credit SS has 2 wins and 2 losses. Three teams have lost three games so far in the Junior Boys: Sandalwood Heights (W 2, L 3), Turner Fenton (W 1, L 3) and Jean Augustine CSS (W 0, L 3). The last game on the schedule in this division, between Central Peel and Castlebook on May 2, could be important from a playoff qualification perspective.
ROPSSAA – Senior Boys
The Senior Boys competition involves twenty-four schools, each assigned to one of four geographical divisions in the initial phase.
Sandalwood SS and Castlebrook SS lead the North Division with records of 3 wins and 1 loss. North Park SS, Fletcher’s Meadow SS and Louise Arbour SS each has 2 wins and 2 losses in a competitive division, leaving Heart Lake SS anchored on 4 losses from 4 games. Sandalwood plays Heart Lake on Tuesday (April 25) and Castlebrook meets Fletcher’s Meadow on Thursday (April 27).
David Suzuki SS (W 3, L 0) leads the North Central Division from Central Peel SS (W 3, L 1). Lincoln M. Alexander SS and Brampton SS each has 2 wins and 2 losses. Turner Fenton SS (W 1, L 1) and Jean Augustine CSS (W 0, L 3) trail in this North Central Division. David Suzuki has games scheduled this week against Turner Fenton today (April 24) and Jean Augustine (April 26). Central Peel meets Brampton Centennial on April 26.
TL Kennedy SS leads the South East Division thanks to 3 wins from 3 games. Four other schools are challenging for a play-off place in this division. Port Credit SS currently has won 2 and lost 1 game. Three teams have each won 2 and lost 2: Glenforest SS, Mentor College and Applewood Heights SS. This leaves Gordon Graydon at the foot of the division due to 4 losses from 4 games. TL Kennedy is scheduled to play Port Credit on Wednesday (April 26) and Gordon Graydon on Thursday (April 27). The last game in this division between Port Credit and Mentor College could prove vital in the challenge to reach the playoffs.
The South West division has two undefeated schools heading the standings. This undefeated duo go head-to-head on Wednesday (April 26) when Rick Hansen SS (W 4, L 0) host Stephen Lewis SS (W 3, L 0). Stephen Lewis is then scheduled to play Meadowvale SS (W 2, L 1) on Friday (April 28). Father Michael Goetz CSS has won 1 and lost 3 games. Clarkson SS and St Francis Xavier CSS have each lost 3 games so far.
