The temperature dropped on Friday morning (May 19, 2017) so it was rather cool to cold for the aspiring girls cricket teams representing four Mississauga Middle Schools at the Iceland Cricket Oval, Mississauga, Ontario. The Cricket Canada KIDS Ten10 went ahead with enthusiasm from the players and each of the schools won at least one game in the round-robin competition where the winning school was decided on most runs scored.
Hillside topped the run scoring with 338 runs and a record of 2 wins and 1 defeat. Hillside had scored 16 more runs than Erin Centre’s 322 runs, although Erin Centre won the head-to-head game by 98 runs to 60.
Allan A. Martin began with a 1-run win against Erin Centre (90/89) then stumbled to a 111/69 run loss to Tomken Road and closed with a heavy defeat against Hillside (164/43). Tomken Road had lost 114/53 to Hillside in the opening round of matches and closed the day playing enthusiastically in a 135/69 loss to Erin Centre.
Having been outside in the early hours of daylight on Friday when not monitoring Canada’s progress against Zimbabwe A it came as a surprise to discover how cool it had become between 6.30am and 10.30am on my way to the ground.
Further Cricket Canada KIDS Ten10 events are in the pipeline, the CIMA Mayor’s Trophy is due to begin in various Greater Toronto Area locations during the coming week, the Toronto District School Board outdoor cricket championships are underway – Western area Boys High School playoffs planned for Tuesday (May 23)- and the Toronto Catholic District School Board is to host a second annual cricket championship.
Meanwhile, the Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association (ROPSSA) indoor cricket championships wrapped up on Wednesday (May 17) so a summary will follow in due course. Some schools in the western parts of Toronto continued to compete in an indoor cricket championship which took place earlier in 2017.
