A profile of Nova Scotia Provincial coach and former fitst-class crickter Reese Telling in the Chronicle Herald:-
The 33-year-old spoke frankly with The Chronicle Herald about the addiction that almost cost him his life.
Telling was raised in the South African city of Port Elizabeth by his grandmother, growing up to become a professional cricket player, with international ambitions of playing for his country.
Sidelined by injury at 21, Telling was warned by doctors that if he didn’t stop playing he’d lose the use of his leg altogether.
Facing challenging times and plagued by depression, he drifted into the party life. Nightclubbing and excessive drinking became his daily lifestyle, Telling said.
“When stress, anxiety and depression got so bad, I moved to hard core drugs like crack cocaine and ecstasy.
“I found myself staying in the streets and begging for food. My family disowned me because of the pain I put my family through by lying and stealing from them. I had to live a life of pain on the street, trying to fight my way through addiction.”
