Guyana won the WI Regional one day tournament that also featured two wins by the Canadian U19 squad.
Guyana Under-19s pulled off a 6-run win against the Windward Islands Under-19s in the closing round of the tournament to remain unbeaten and win the 2017 Cricket West Indies Under-19 Regional One Day Championship on Monday (August 28, 2017) in St. Kitts. Both teams had an early stand in the nineties before phases in each innings when the bowlers gained control.
Guyanese openers Raymond Perez (77) and Joushua Persaud (40) posted 91 from 21.4 overs. A run out ended a second wicket partnership of 99 runs between Windwards Wayne Edwards (43) and captain Emmanuel Stewart (48). A late blast of 23 runs from 12 balls by Daneal Dupigny gave Windwards hope of victory before a second run out sealed victory and the championship for Guyana.
Guyana won the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Under-19 3-day championship before the One-Day tournament began. The CWI Under-19 One-Day tournament brought in an ICC Americas team, that became Canada Under-19s thanks to ICC Americas and the Canadian juniors success in the Americas U19 World Cup Qualifier. The CWI U19 One-Day tournament saw the return of leading West Indies junior cricketers from a successful tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe on the road to defending the ICC U19 crown won last year in Bangladesh.
Guyana U19 soundly beat Trinidad and Tobago U19s by 8 wickets in a crucial game in Round 6, last Saturday (August 26). That same day the ICC Americas/Canada U19s schedule concluded with a record of 2 wins and 4 defeats.
So Guyana U19s ended as champions with six wins. Trinidad and Tobago U19s placed second with 5 wins and 1 defeat. The Windward Islands won 3 and lost 3 to place third. Three teams had records of 2 wins and 4 defeats: Barbados U19s, ICC Americas/Canada U19s and the Leeward Islands U19s.
