Although the Cricket Canada web site is silent on the issue, it seems that a new national selection committee might be in place, based on Cricket BC’s announcement that Suhan Kumar Alagaratnam has been appointed to the selection committee and will be present at the Western T20.
Suhan is an active player for the Malaysian national team, most recently representing them in May at the ICC World Cricket League Division Four tournament where Malaysia placed 3rd. He previously had captained the team. The 31 year-old is currently secretary of the Victoria District Cricket Association, and plays for the Albion club (VDCA player page).
It is good to discover some progress is being made on having selectors in place, and Suhan seems well qualified, although falling short of the standards expected in Cricket Canada’s selection policy which states that selectors should:-
– Have played at the highest level for Canada or a full member of the ICC (1st Preference)
– Have played 1st Class cricket in a full member country for at least 2 seasons ( 2nd Preference) or
– Have played in a sanctioned international tournament such as IPL, Big Bash, CPL etc
His extensive experience of associate cricket will certainly prove useful, and we wish him well in his efforts.
