Round-robin concludes today for Ontario Regional U16s

Ontario North U16s

The third and final pair of round-robin matches are due to be played at Centennial Park, Etobicoke today (Friday, 28 June 2019). Unbeaten North U16s (Won 2, Lost 0) meet West U16s (W 1, L 1) on Ground B and South (W 1, L 1) go up against East (W 0, L 2) on Ground A. Both games are scheduled to start at 12.30pm. The Championship final is due to be played on Tuesday (2 July 2019), as is the playoff for third place.
North U16s winning start
North U16 began with a win against East U19 on Wednesday (26 June) in a low-scoring game. North U16’s 95 all out from 31 overs proved too much, on the day, for East U16s who used up slightly more than half the available 40 overs in sliding to 49 all out (22 overs). Opening bat Ramanvir Dhaliwal lead Norths with 24 runs and likely took part in the highest partnership of the innings with number 3 batter, Yasir Mahmood, who scored 17. Number 9 batter, Karan Amin managed to make 10. Extras accounted for 28 runs, including 20 wides and 2 no-balls.
East U16’s Ayush Singh took the first wicket, ending with 1 for 13 from 5 overs. Khabir Kanna took control of the bowling with 5 wickets for 17 runs from 8 overs, well supported by Anoush Fernandez with 4 for 20 from 8 overs.
The breakdown of wickets was similar when North U16 bowled out East U16 for 49, a total aided by 21 extras, 13 of which were wides. The highest score from the bat was 7 by Harjap Saini. Karan Amin bowled the opening bat for a duck, then Kairav Sharma with 5/20 from 7 overs and Rohan Garg 4/15 from 5 overs breezed through the East’s batting.
North U16s then beat South U16 by 13 runs on Thursday (June 27). Ramanvir Dhaliwal struck 66 from 104 balls (1×4), leading an opening stand of 43 (16.3 overs) with Kristopher Karran, who made 12. Yasir Mahmood, batting third, made 10 and number 10 Eran Maliduwapathirana chipped in with 10 not out. Kyle Karran dismissed both opening batters, ending with 2/22 from 8 overs, while Aarth Kuyeskar took 2 middle-order wickets for 17 from 8 overs.
South’s innings was built upon a half-centry by opening bat Siddh Lad but collapsed after reaching the century mark. Aarth Kuyeskar was bowled for 15 by North captain Abhinav Dikshit: 100/3 from 23.5 overs. Sidd Lad was caught for 54 by Kristopher Karran three balls later off the bowling of Kairav Sharma. Scoring 35 runs to win from the remaining 15.4 overs proved to be a major challenge for South U16s. The eighth wicket managed to add 12 runs with a few from the bat, some leg-byes, wides and a no-ball. The end came when the team was all out for 121 at the end of 38 overs. Kairav Sharma took 3 for 23 from 8 overs. Five other bowlers accounted for the other 7 wickets.
Wins for South U16s and West U16s
On opening day, Siddh Lad had lead the way for South U16s with 79 runs against West U16s. South U16’s hit 174/8 from 40 overs with Sheel Patel scoring 27 and Parth 18*. West U16s
replied with 100/8 from 40 overs. Afseh Khan made 19 for West’s while Kyle Karran took 3/13 from 6 overs. The scorecard for this game is not currently on CricClubs.com.
West U16s beat East U16s on Thursday after scoring 132 all out from 39.1 overs. Opening bats Sahil Badin and Asim Ahmed carried the total to 59 when Asim Ahmed was caught for 24. Sahil Badin fell lbw to Ethan Gibson for 40, out third with the total on 79. Two more wickets fell on 79, Ethan Gibson picked up his third wicket with the total on 81 but Aarav Kuyeskar battled away to score 24* and lead West U16s a closing 132 all out after 39.1 overs. Ethan Gibson ended with 3/25 from 7 overs.
Zubayir Alikhan caught and bowled Gibson from the first ball of the East U16s innings then followed with 2 wickets from the first two balls of the fifth over to leave East’s on the backfoot. Ayush Singh came in and hit 27 in a stand of 52 for the fourth wicket. Opening bat Anoush Fernandez battled away to reach 15 from 114 balls before being caught off Sahil Badin; East U16s 70/5, 32.3 overs. Ayaz Sahibi managed 15 runs from 23 balls, batting at number eight, before being caught from the last ball of the 40 overs. East U16s 102/8 from 40 overs left West U16s with a win by 30 runs. The later East batters mostly struggled to make runs against the slower bowlers.
So North U16s will be looking for a win to remain undefeated in the closing games of the round- robin phase against West U16 who probably need a win to reach Tuesday’s Championship Final. South U16s will be looking for victory against East U16s, who will be hoping to break into the win column. Hopefully, the possible rumblings from the skies projected for later in the day will manage to steer clear of Centennial Park, Etobicoke. (EN)
