Owner of GT20 League to pay Canadian players $30,000 a year in a bid to qualify for World Cup

Norm Da Costa’s article for the Toronto Sun has a long interview with Global T20 owner Gurmeet Singh, which includes big news for the top level of Canadian cricket:-

“Gurmeet’s vision for the national team kicks into operation this year. For the first time in the history of the sport the Canadians will earn $30,000 a year.

“We want to make it as professional an environment for the players as possible who now have to juggle between full-time jobs and play the game on a part-time basis. We’ve asked Cricket Canada to select 24 players from the national squad, the developmental squad and the under-19 team to start training at a cricket academy in Toronto and then embark on their first trip later this year to Australia.”

Former Australian fast bowler Geoff Lawson is among three stars on an advisory board and will take charge of the squad Down Under. The others are cricket icons — Wasim Akram of Pakistan and Brian Lara of the West Indies. Lara is in the process of arranging matches and a training camp in the Caribbean in 2020.”
