ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier: Canada must beat UAE to Reach Playoffs

Group B (Game in Progress): Jersey 141/7 (20 overs) v Oman Group B (Next and Closing Group Match): Canada v UAE
Canada (Won 3, Lost 2, NRR 0.433) must beat hosts UAE (Won 3, Lost 2, NRR 0.656) in the last Group B match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier today (27 October 2019) to qualify for the playoffs. Four wins would put Canada equal with Ireland (W 4, L 2, NRR 1.591.
One game is in progress and will end before Canada and the UAE take the field for a night game in Abu Dhabi: Oman (currently: Won 4, Lost 1, NRR 1.388) won the toss and decided Jersey would bat first. A win would move Oman to 5 wins and seal both first place in Group B and a place in next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Ireland would drop into second place and be a repeat of the recent Oman Pentangular (5 countries) where Oman won all four matches including the head-to-head with Ireland who won their other three games.
Jersey (currently Won 2, Lost 3, NRR -0.039) ended on a useful 141/7 after 20 overs against Oman when this report was first filed. Jersey ended above “steady progress” and is in with a chance of winning by doing the basics well.
Short of some miracle, Jersey will not be able to emulate Australia’s feat today in Adelaide of winning a T20I by big enough margin on runs to significantly improve NRR, but with steady cricket Jersey may be able to bag a surprise win against Oman. Beyond this T20 Qualifier, Australia scored 233/2 from 20 overs, lead by David “GT20″ Warner’s 100*, then held Sri Lanka to just 99/9 from 29 overs, sealing victory by 134 runs. So if Jersey beat Oman, Jersey’s NRR is unlikely to challenge for a top four position in the Group.
Hong Kong fired quick runs to beat Nigeria (Won 0, Lost 6, NRR -4.673) early on Sunday (27 October 2017). Hong Kong moved ahead of Canada in the Group B standings due to a better Net Run Rate (NRR). It was Hong Kong’s third consecutive win after a losing start.
Nigeria’s opening batsmen began well, taking the score to 30 for no wicket but two wickets fell at that score. Nigeria battled away to reach 81 for 8 wickets from the available 20 overs. Hong Kong opener Niazkat Khan clipped a quick 21 runs from 9 balls and Kinchit Shah clipped 25 from 10 balls. Two others chipped in with runs in double figures as Hong Kong crossed the winning line with 82/5 after 7.1 overs.
This rush to victory win carried Hong Kong to 3 wins and 3 losses from 6 matches and , significantly from a Canadian perspective, raised the HK NRR to . So Hong Kong’s NRR is now better than Canada’s going into the last group game of the round-robin phase of the T20 World Cup Qualifier.
So Canada Cricket Online send our best wishes to the Canadian team in Abu Dhabi for the win over the UAE that would carry Canada to 4 wins and a place in this ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier playoffs.
