Journey to ICC 2027 World Cup begins for Canada

The long qualification path toward the next 50-over World Cup begins for Canada the last week of February in the United Arab Emirates. It is Canada’s first foray into the Cricket World Cup League 2, a One-Day International tournament extending over 3 years providing competition for the top 8 ICC Associate members. It doubles as a qualifier toward the 2027 World Cup.

CWC League 2 plays out in groups of 3 nations at a time, each team playing the others twice. Over the course of three years, each team will be grouped with the other seven to play 9 tri-series and 36 ODIs. Canada’s schedule opens February 27th with a tri-series against the host UAE and the Scots. It ends in October 2026 on the road in Oman. At the conclusion, the four teams topping the League 2 standings progress to the World Cup Qualifiers. The bottom four must play another tournament to decide the teams that continue the chase to the World Cup and those relegated to the 2nd tier of Associate cricket. Having just been promoted from the lower tier, Canada will hope to avoid a return.

It has been a decade since this country has competed regularly against the elite of Associate cricket. It is a considerable step up in standard for most of the team and a major test of the depth in the Canadian system as it tries to integrate new players. To prepare, Canada embarked on a month-long tour to Hong Kong and Nepal. The Nepal leg in particular, where Canada lost each of the 3 ODIs, showed some of the difficulties the team faces against more experienced and talented sides. However, some among the Canadians did raise their game, something the team will hope to build on in the UAE.
