BANGALORE, India — Canadian John Davison will bow out of international cricket on Wednesday, when he plays for the country of his birth against the country where he grew up and dreamed of representing.
Davison, who lit up the 2003 World Cup with a 67-ball century, was born in Campbell River, B.C., and has spent most of his life in Australia. He gets his first chance to play against Australia in his final international match after confirming on Wednesday he would retire after the tournament.
“I suppose it’s pretty fitting that it’s against Australia,” the 40-year-old all-rounder said Tuesday. “Lived all my life there, never quite good enough to get a game for them, but it’ll be a great experience to play against them.”
And the opposition captain is looking forward to seeing a familiar face in the Canada team.
“I know a lot about him as a cricketer,” Australia skipper Ricky Ponting said. “I went to the cricket academy with John 20 years ago. We had a few overseas tours together as part of that academy and we’ve played with and against each other for quite a period of time through different state competitions at home.
“He’s obviously got some great memories of World Cup cricket playing with Canada he probably never thought he would have, looking back to the early days.”
