Newfoundland season opens

Cricket Newfoundland and Labrador’s 20-20 Summer League got underway this Saturday at the RCAF field off Torbay Road (the former provincial recreation centre field). Sixty players are registered for the league and have been allocated into three equally balanced teams- the Thunderbolts, the Terra Novas and the St. John’s Superkings. Each team will play the others five times, with the tournament culminating in a final tentatively scheduled for the Labour Day weekend with the Atul Ahuja trophy to be awarded to the winning team.

In the opening match, the Thunderbolts made 110 runs in 20 overs, led by Waqas Hanif’s 32. The Terra Novas were all out for 73, thanks to some excellent bowling from man-of-the match Pawan who took four wickets for 18 runs. In the second match, captain Rakesh Negi’s 52 led the St.John’s Super Kings to 105 and the Terra Novas fell 22 runs short in their reply.

There’s strong interest from newcomers to the game, and beginner’s sessions are scheduled for later in the month. Provincial team selection has been narrowed down to a squad of 20, and they are preparing for the Atlantic T20 tournament to be held in PEI in early July.
