Nova Scotia still unbeaten in Martimes 40-over Championship

David Campbell struck 72 not out, Tyson Joyce made 53 and Arslan Khan 42 as Nova Scotia rattled up 248 runs for the loss of four wickets in 40 overs on Saturday (July 28th) in Halifax against New Brunswick. The visitors battled away to reach 104 all out with Sameer Patel scoring 44 and Akram Khan making 20. Opening bowlers Vivek Reddy and Matt Gove each took two wickets, as did Dinesh Gaddam.

This was Nova Scotia’s third win in three games in this season’s 40 over championship and seems to guarantee a place in the final on September 1st. The matches between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island on August 11th in Fredericton, NB, and on August 28th in Stratford, PEI, will be important in deciding the other finalist. In between those games, Nova Scotia visit Prince Edward Island for a game at Tea Hill Park, Stratford on August 18th.

New Brunswick had some early success when the prolific Amit Joshi was run out for 13 at the end of the fifth over. However, Arsalan Khan and Tyson Joyce joined in a second wicket stand of 97 in 22.5 overs that ended when Arsalan Khan was caught by Akram Khan off the bowling of Mark Outar for 42. Arslan Khan hit four boundaries in an innings that lasted 85 balls. Captain Hari Raghuraman was caught off Sameer Patel’s bowling for a quick 11 runs (7 balls) to leave Nova Scotia on 139 for three at the start of the 31st over. Joyce fell to a catch off Patel in the 35th over with his score on 53, and the total 169 for four. He hit three boundaries in an innings of 99 balls. David Campbell blazed his way to 72 not out from 37 balls in these last ten overs. His knock included five fours and six sixes. The fifth wicket added an unbroken 79 runs in the last 5.3 overs, mostly due to Campbell’s blitz. Shreyas Dhond made 9 not out. Sameer Patel took two wickets for 56 runs from seven overs. Rich Woolin bowled a tidy eight overs for 23 runs and Hasan Syed bowled six overs for 17 runs.

Vivek Reddy had Aditya Agarwal caught for a duck in the opening over when New Brunswick batted. Reddy then caught New Brunswick captain Palash Verma off Matt Gove’s bowling to leave the visitors with two wickets down and no runs on the board. Gove then bowled Mark Outar for a duck to end the fourth over with the visitors having just scored the one run for the loss of three wickets. Rich Woolin made 5 before being caught with the score on 23.

Sameer Patel and Akram Khan battled away in a stand of 45 for the fourth wicket which ended in the 25th over with Arkam Khan being run out for 20 by Arslan Khan. Sameer Patel was eventually out for the innings top-score of 44, made from 76 balls. It included six boundaries. His was the seventh wicket to fall with the total on 88 in the 30th over. A few more runs were scored by the tail enders until the last wicket fell with 104 on the scoreboard after 35.5 overs. Mark Outar took two wickets for 7 runs in four overs. Vivek Reddy took two wickets for 14 runs in six overs and Dinesh Gaddam took two wickets for 13 runs in three overs.
