Opening bat Ankush Gogna showered nine shots over the boundary for six in leading Beryl Ford Public School to a total of 113 runs for two wickets from ten overs against Cheyne Middle School at Sandalwood-Dixie Park on Tuesday (May 27). Ankush Gogna’s innings ended when he retired after scoring 69 runs (including 9×6’s and 2×4’s) to allow another batsman the chance to face a few balls in the closing over.
The use of the short 30 yard circle as the boundary in Middle Schools games in the CIMA Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament seemed too easy as Gogna carried the boundary with ease from some shots. But scoring runs proved a challenge for Cheyne Middle School facing the need to reach 114 runs to win. Indeed Gogna picked up two wickets for just five runs from two overs to add to this run scoring challenge and his opening batting partner Harkaran Mann also took two for five during the Cheyne MS innings. Mann had earlier scored 9 with the bat.
Cheyne MS battled away to reach 31 for seven wickets when the ten over innings limit was reached.
So Beryl Ford won the game by 82 runs and in winning this game became the first CIMA Mayor’s School Cricket champions in Brampton for the Middle Schools category. The school’s name will appear on the related CIBC Trophy.
Beryl Ford will be back in action at Brampton’s Dixie-Sandalwood Park this coming Saturday when the Greater Toronto Area championships will be decided for Middle Schools, Boys High Schools and Girls High Schools. (EN)
