Hardik Kotak and Devang Patel knocks lead UOIT to success
Step aside the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League, there is a new champion on the sporting block in Oshawa following the 107 run win by UOIT (the University of Ontario Institute of Technology) against the University of Waterloo in the Final of the Canadian Universities and Colleges Championship on Friday (September 7th). UOIT’s success in the final followed a 35 run semi-final win against the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. The University of Waterloo had beaten Ryerson University by five wickets in the other semi-final. Both semi-finals were staged earlier on Friday at at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club, King City, Ontario and involved the four group winners from qualification matches played earlier in the week.

In the semi-finals an innings of 70 from opening bat Hardik Kotak, that included a stand of 82 for the third wicket with Devang Patel (37 runs), formed the foundation of UOIT’s 142 for six in 16 overs. In the Final, Hardik Kotak made 32 and featured in a stand of 52 for the third wicket with Devang Patel that ended with Kotak being caught. Patel powered his way to 92 not out from 52 balls, adding an unbroken 88 runs with Parth Desai (24 not out) for the sixth wicket.

Desai made a major impact in the Waterloo innings, taking six wickets for 11 runs in his four overs. He began by bowling W. Cheema (15 runs), who had added 29 for the third wicket with W. Imtiaz. N. Randhawa hit a four and a six but was then caught off Desai for 14. Desai then had Imtiaz caught 14 from the first ball of the ninth over, leaving Waterloo sinking at 54 for five wickets. V Samant hit a six and a four to reach 14 before last man out. Sammant was caught by Hardik Kotak off the one ball bowled in the match by Devang Patel. Waterloo all out for 73 from 12.1 overs, giving UOIT the 2012 Jack Layton Memorial Trophy.

Layton was best known in recent times as a politician who lead the New Democratic Party in 2011 to become the Official Opposition in Canada’s Federal Parliament, but who succumbed to cancer later in the year. But Layton had success in the academic world. He gained degrees in political science at McGill University (Montreal) and then at York University before becoming a Professor at what is now Ryerson University, as well as teaching at the University of Toronto and York University.

The University of Waterloo beat Ryerson University in the semi-final stage. Ryerson scored 127 for nine wickets in 16 overs. Hassan Mirza (20) and H Zaidi added 40 runs in 5.3 overs for the fourth wicket, then Zaidi joined with S Shah to add 51 for the fifth wicket. Zaidi was then caught for 44 made from 30 balls (3×4’s, 1×6) in the fourteenth over. Shah scored 32 from 27 balls. S Imtiaz took three wickets for 26 runs.
